What is the “Annual Fuel Mix Disclosure and CO2 Emissions Report”?
The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) published the most recent “Annual Fuel Mix Disclosure and CO2 Emissions Report” in December 2024. It shows:
- Each supplier’s electricity source breakdown (coal, gas, oil, renewables, etc.)
- The carbon intensity (gCO₂/kWh) of each supplier’s fuel mix
- Where energy suppliers get their power from (Ireland or abroad)
This helps businesses choose suppliers that align with their sustainability goals. You can find the “Fuel Mix and CO2 Emissions Disclosure” on CRU’s website.
Can businesses get 100% renewable energy?
In simple terms, yes – your business can get 100% renewable energy even if your supplier’s overall fuel mix is not 100% renewable.
Most top-tier energy suppliers in Ireland offer fully renewable energy plans to businesses. In some cases, opting for a renewable business electricity plan will not cost you anything. Other suppliers may add a small premium to your contract for a certified renewable electricity. This premium may vary, but it’s usually around 0.2-0.3 cents/kWh.
Fully understanding how your energy is sourced is important to avoid greenwashing. You can have a look at our “How to Avoid Greenwashing?” article for more information

How Suppliers Certify Electricity as “100% Renewable”
When you see that your supplier is sourcing 100% renewable energy, this does not necessarily mean that your energy originates from renewable sources in Ireland. A supplier may offer “100% renewable electricity” through one or more of the following methods:
1. Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs)
Large businesses can buy electricity directly from a specific renewable generator (like a wind farm or solar farm). This provides traceable, Irish-generated renewable power.
2. Irish Guarantee of Origin Certificates (GOs)
Suppliers buy Irish GOs to verify that energy is generated from certified renewable sources in Ireland. Each GO = 1 MWh of renewable electricity.
3. Imported Renewable Certificates
Some suppliers offset carbon by purchasing GOs from outside Ireland, such as Norway or mainland Europe. These are still classified as renewable - but less impactful for Ireland’s own energy transition.
Ireland’s Green Energy Supply – What to Watch Out For
In 2023, while 61% of electricity supplied in Ireland was classified as renewable, only about 34% was generated within Ireland. This means many “green” plans rely on imported renewable certificates - which may not support local infrastructure or emissions reductions. Be aware of:
- Greenwashing through imported certificates
- Suppliers with a renewable product but a mixed fuel mix
- Lack of transparency about sourcing

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
This annual report, published by the CRU, outlines the energy sources used by electricity suppliers, helping businesses make informed decisions.
According to the CRU’s 2023 Fuel Mix Report, the following suppliers had a 100% renewable electricity mix with zero CO₂ emissions: Flogas, SSE Airtricity, Go Power, and Pinergy. However 100% renewable electricity can be sourced from most suppliers. Utilityfair can source 100% renewable electricity from the following additional suppliers: Electric Ireland, Energia and Bord Gais.
Yes. Many Irish energy suppliers offer 100% renewable electricity plans for businesses. Some provide them as standard, while others add a small premium of 0.2–0.3 cents per kWh.
It means your supplier offsets your electricity usage with an equivalent amount of certified renewable energy, using Irish or international Guarantees of Origin (GOs). The electricity itself still comes from the shared national grid.
Not necessarily. Some suppliers offer green energy at no extra cost, while others charge a small green premium. The additional cost, if any, is usually less than 0.5% of your total bill.
A GO certificate verifies that the electricity was produced from renewable sources. Suppliers use GOs to prove the environmental credentials of their energy offering, even if the actual electricity comes from the grid.
Yes it still classified and renewable under the rules. However while imported GOs legally certify renewable supply, they do not contribute to Ireland’s energy infrastructure. Irish GOs or direct Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) support local renewables and offer greater environmental impact.
In 2023, 61.01% of electricity supplied in Ireland was classified as renewable. However, only 34% was generated within Ireland, with the rest supported by imported certificates.
You can verify your supplier’s fuel mix and carbon intensity by checking the CRU’s Annual Fuel Mix and CO₂ Emissions Disclosure Report at cru.ie. Our energy expects can also quickly answer the question for you.
Renewable energy is generated from sources like wind, solar, or hydro. Low-carbon energy may include gas or biomass, which emits CO₂ but less than fossil fuels. Only renewable sources qualify for GO certificates in Ireland.
Utilityfair compares suppliers, verifies green credentials, and ensures you’re not overpaying for a certified renewable plan. We help businesses avoid greenwashing and meet their sustainability targets with confidence.
