What is the Irish Business Electricity Price Index?

Utilityfair is Ireland's largest business energy broker, with over 20,000 active business customers and more than 1,000 electricity contracts arranged each month.

The Utilityfair Irish Business Electricity Price Index tracks actual electricity unit rates from fixed-price and wholesale tracker contracts, providing an independent monthly benchmark showing whether commercial electricity prices are rising, falling or remaining stable.

Unlike advertised supplier tariffs or wholesale market prices, the index is based on real electricity prices paid by Irish businesses. Rates are broken down by meter category and industry sector, allowing businesses to compare contracted prices, monitor monthly movements and see what similar businesses are paying for electricity.

Understanding Electricity Contracts

Fixed-Price Contracts: The electricity unit rate is agreed at the start of the contract and remains fixed for the contract period, providing protection against increases in wholesale electricity prices.
Wholesale Tracker Contracts: Electricity rates move in line with wholesale market prices. Businesses benefit when wholesale prices fall but pay more when wholesale prices rise.

How to Read the Electricity Price Tables

October Rates: Average electricity unit rates agreed in new contracts during October 2026.
Monthly Change: Percentage increase or decrease compared with September 2026.
12-Month Average: Average wholesale tracker rates on a 12 month rolling average basis, smoothing out monthly volatility.

Our Methodology: 100% Real Electricity Contract Data

Actual Contract Rates,
Not Advertised Prices

Our index uses actual electricity unit rates agreed in thousands of commercial contracts arranged by Utilityfair. Unlike advertised supplier tariffs or indicative quotes, these rates reflect what Irish businesses are actually paying for electricity.

Business Contracts Only,
No Domestic Meters

Domestic electricity meters are excluded because residential rates have different regulatory charges and network costs. This keeps the index focused on commercial prices businesses actually pay, without distortions from domestic markets.

Over 1,000 Contracts Analysed Every Month

With over 20,000 active business customers, Utilityfair arranges more than 1,000 electricity contracts monthly. Each month's index is calculated using actual rates from real commercial electricity contracts, providing a substantial dataset for tracking business electricity prices.

Categorised by Most Common Meter Types

Electricity rates are grouped into four commercial meter categories: 24-Hour, Nightsaver, Night Storage Heating and LVMD. Day and night rates are calculated separately, allowing businesses to compare prices for their specific meter type.

Data Validation & Quality Control

Contract data is checked for errors, incomplete records and unusually high or low rates. Non-comparable charges and invalid entries are excluded to ensure the index reflects accurate and consistent commercial electricity prices.

Tracking Monthly Electricity Price Movements

Each month's average contracted electricity rates are compared with the previous month to calculate percentage changes. This shows whether business electricity prices are rising or falling across different meter categories.

Why We Built the Irish Business Electricity Price Index

Business electricity prices in Ireland lack transparency. Unlike domestic electricity tariffs, commercial rates are not routinely published, making it difficult for businesses to know whether they are getting a competitive deal.

Businesses are often left comparing individual supplier quotes or relying on brokers with access to only a limited number of suppliers. Some brokerage models involve multiple intermediaries, each of which must be paid for. Similarly, some industry association deals include additional payments to the association. These costs need to be funded, resulting in businesses paying higher electricity prices.

Utilityfair operates differently. We compare electricity prices across all Irish suppliers and show businesses the most competitive available options. By publishing actual rates agreed in more than 1,000 contracts each month, we are bringing greater transparency to commercial electricity pricing and giving businesses an independent benchmark against which to assess their own rates.

Automatic contract renewals and expensive out-of-contract tariffs are another major concern. Businesses can find themselves paying substantially higher rates when their contracts expire, while renewal offers from existing suppliers are not always as competitive as those available to new customers.

Utilityfair launched the Irish Business Electricity Price Index in August 2026 to address these problems. Our goal is simple: make business electricity pricing more transparent, help businesses avoid overpaying and give them the information they need to compare prices, negotiate better contracts and plan their future electricity costs.
