30-Second Overview

Submitting accurate electricity and gas meter readings to your supplier, ESB and Gas Networks Ireland, ensures you’re billed for the energy you’ve actually used. Otherwise, you could be billed based on an estimated reading. Accurate readings prevent overpayments, underpayments, and unexpected catch-up bills.

Why Accurate Meter Readings Matter for Businesses?

Correctly reading your electricity and gas meters gives an insight into how much energy your business is actually using. This will allow you to spot changes in energy usage early, giving you the chance to cut down and lower energy bills. In addition, by providing suppliers with accurate readings, you will only be billed for your actual usage. This prevents problems like:

  • Overbilling: Paying more than you owe if the estimates are higher than actual usage.
  • Underbilling: Paying less now but facing a large catch-up bill later.
  • Budgeting issues: Making it harder to forecast energy costs.
  • Missed efficiency insights: Without accurate usage data, it’s harder to track the success of energy-saving measures.

How Often Should You Submit Meter Readings?

Most suppliers recommend submitting readings once a month - ideally just before your billing date. If you have a smart electricity meter, readings are sent automatically to ESB Networks. You should check your meter periodically to make sure that it is transmitting data, but there is no need to submit the meter readings separately.

How Can I Submit an Electricity or Gas Meter Reading?

The first step is to read your electricity and gas meter. While each meter type has its own format, these general tips apply:

  • Write down numbers from left to right.
  • Ignore any red numbers or those after a decimal point.
  • Double-check you’re reading the correct meter if you are in a complex that has several meters.
